And when it’s the right answer

An industrial inverter converts DC to AC. That is the whole definition, and it is what separates it from every UPS on this site: a UPS takes mains in, rectifies it and inverts it back, carrying a battery for the gap. An industrial inverter has no mains input of its own. It sits on a DC source that is already there — a station battery, a switchgear DC bus, a solar or telecom bank — and turns it into a clean AC supply.

The classic application is a substation or a plant control room. The station battery and its charger already exist, sized for tripping and closing coils. The AC control supply, the protection relays, the SCADA and RTU racks, the annunciators and the emergency lighting all still need mains-quality AC, and none of them should care whether the incoming supply is present. The inverter is what makes that true. The same arrangement turns up in power plants, telecom exchanges, refineries and process plants.

This is normally half a system rather than a product on its own. The other half is the charger and the bank behind it, which we also build — so the DC bus voltage, the charger rating, the battery Ah and the inverter can be specified together against one load list, instead of three suppliers each assuming something about the other two.

vs An online UPS

A UPS brings its own rectifier, bypass and mains input. If the site already has a station battery and a charger, all of that is duplicated hardware you are paying for twice. Where the DC already exists, the inverter alone is the right answer.

vs A DG set

A DG is a source for hours, but it takes eight to fifteen seconds to start and load. A control supply and a protection relay cannot be absent for eight seconds — that is precisely the window in which the fault happens.

vs An offline UPS

An offline UPS is a mains-connected appliance sized in kVA and plugged in. This is an engineered DC system built around your bus voltage and your load list. Different product, different conversation.

What is an industrial inverter?

An industrial inverter converts DC into AC. It is fed from a battery bank or a station DC bus rather than from the mains, and it produces a stable pure sine wave AC supply for loads that must stay live regardless of what the incoming supply is doing. It is not a home inverter and it is not a UPS — there is no mains input and no transfer.

What is the difference between an industrial inverter and a UPS?

A UPS takes mains in, converts it to DC and back to AC, and keeps a battery for the gap. An industrial inverter starts at the DC. If your site already has a station battery and charger — most substations, power plants and telecom exchanges do — a UPS duplicates the rectifier you already own. If there is no DC source, you want a UPS.

Can it run from our existing station battery?

Usually, and that is the normal case. What we need is the bus voltage, the bank capacity and the existing charger rating, plus the AC load list. The one thing worth checking early is whether the bank was sized only for tripping and closing duty — a continuous AC load on it changes the sizing, and it is better to find that out on paper than on site.

Do you supply the charger and the battery as well?

We build the charger — float-cum-boost and SMPS types — so the charger and inverter can be designed as one system against one load list. Battery banks we specify and source rather than manufacture. Quoting all three together is generally cheaper than three separate enquiries, and it removes the gap where each supplier assumes the other one covered something.
