And when it’s the right answer
In cathodic electrodeposition and in plating generally, the deposit thickness is a direct function of current × time. If the current wanders, the coating varies, and you find out at the salt-spray test rather than on the line. A plating rectifier is therefore first a current regulator and only incidentally a power supply.
Ripple matters as much as regulation. High ripple produces a grainy, poorly-adherent deposit and wastes chemistry. Our units hold ripple under 5% and, with the filtered option, under 2%.
CED lines additionally need a ramp: voltage rises on a defined profile as the body enters the tank, to avoid gassing and to control film build. Our CED units store multiple ramp recipes and switch between them from the panel or from the line PLC.
A bench supply regulates voltage. Plating needs constant current across a changing bath resistance, plus ramp control and ampere-hour totalising for chemistry dosing.
A plain transformer and bridge gives you DC, but the current wanders with bath resistance and mains voltage. Closed-loop thyristor control holds the setpoint, which is what makes the deposit repeatable.

What ripple is acceptable for a plating rectifier?
Under 5% is fine for most decorative and functional plating. Under 2% is worth specifying for bright nickel, chrome and any application where deposit grain structure is critical. Above roughly 10% you will see it in the finish.
Air cooled or oil cooled?
Air cooled is simpler and cheaper to maintain. In a plating shop where the atmosphere is corrosive and airborne chemistry attacks the heatsinks and windings, oil cooled lasts significantly longer. The shop environment usually decides this rather than the current rating.
Can the rectifier be controlled from our line PLC?
Yes. Standard interfaces are RS-485 Modbus RTU and 4–20 mA analogue setpoint with run/stop and fault contacts. Ethernet/IP and Profibus are available to order — tell us the PLC make at the enquiry stage.
Do you supply the busbar and tank connections?
We supply the rectifier with output terminals sized for the rating. Busbar runs to the tank are usually done locally because the layout differs per shop, but we will produce the busbar sizing calculation and a layout drawing with the order.
