How it works

And when it’s the right answer

A static frequency converter rectifies the incoming supply to DC and re-synthesises AC at whatever frequency and voltage you specify. There is no motor-generator set, so there is nothing to align, lubricate or replace, and the output frequency is crystal-stable rather than dependent on a shaft speed.

Three situations account for most of what we build. Imported machinery rated for 60 Hz, 220 V or 480 V arriving on an Indian 50 Hz, 415 V supply. Export manufacturers who need to factory-test equipment on the destination country’s supply before shipping. And 400 Hz aviation ground power for hangars and MRO facilities.

Output voltage and frequency are both configurable, so the converter also handles the voltage translation — you do not need a separate transformer downstream.

vs A motor-generator set

No rotating parts, roughly 90% efficient against 70–80%, far quieter, a fraction of the footprint, and no bearing or alignment maintenance.

vs A VFD

A VFD drives one motor with a PWM output that is not a clean sine wave. An SFC produces a filtered sine suitable for any load, including electronics and control gear.

Can I run a 60 Hz machine directly on a 50 Hz supply?

Usually not safely. Motors run 17% slower and the reduced reactance at 50 Hz raises magnetising current, which overheats the windings. Timers and control gear referenced to line frequency drift. Transformers can saturate. The cheap experiment tends to end with a rewind.

Why is 400 Hz used in aviation?

At 400 Hz a transformer or motor of the same rating needs roughly an eighth of the magnetic core mass it would need at 50 Hz. On an aircraft that weight saving is decisive, so aircraft systems standardised on it — and ground support has to match.

Does the converter also change the voltage?

Yes. Output voltage and frequency are set independently, so a single unit takes 415 V 50 Hz in and gives, say, 480 V 60 Hz or 200 V 400 Hz out. No separate transformer is needed.
