Lift inverters and battery backup systems for elevators

Not a rescue device that parks the car and stops. The lift keeps running — normal service, normal speed, up to eight hours on battery — so a power cut in a residential tower is something the residents never find out about.

How it works

And when it’s the right answer

A lift stalling between floors is not a comfort problem, it is a rescue problem — and a lift that simply keeps working is a better answer than one rescued from a stall. The backup sits between the incoming supply and the lift controller: it detects the failure and energises the drive from its own battery bank, and the lift carries on running. Passengers waiting in the lobby are not told to use the stairs, the car already in transit completes its journey, and service continues at normal speed until either the mains returns or the bank runs down — up to eight hours. Only at that point does it bring the car to a landing and open the doors before shutting off.

This is the piece of the building that gets specified last and matters first. It also happens to be mandatory practice under most state lift rules and a standing requirement in almost every commercial building handover checklist in Maharashtra.

Our units work with geared and gearless traction drives and with hydraulic lifts, and retrofit to an existing controller without replacing the drive. We size against the machine rating and the controller type, not against the building.

vs Relying on the DG set

A DG takes 8–15 seconds to start and load, and in a power cut with a DG failure the car stays where it is. The lift inverter is independent of both.

vs A generic inverter

A lift drive is a regenerative load — the motor feeds power back when the car descends loaded. A general-purpose inverter will trip or be damaged. These are built to absorb it.

vs An ARD (automatic rescue device)

An ARD ends the trip — nearest floor, doors open, shutdown. This keeps the lift in service. If nobody being trapped is the whole requirement, the ARD is the smaller and cheaper answer and we build that too.

Lift Inverter — questions we get asked

Anything not covered here, call us — most of it is faster to answer on the phone.

What does a lift inverter do?

It is a battery-backed power source wired between the incoming supply and the lift controller. On a mains failure the lift carries on running — normal service at normal speed, for up to eight hours depending on the bank — and hands back to mains when the supply returns. It is not a rescue device that parks the car at the nearest floor and stops; that behaviour only happens at the very end, when the battery runs low, so nobody is ever left between floors. If a rescue trip is all your building actually needs, that is the ARD — a smaller, cheaper product we build separately.

Can a lift inverter be fitted to an existing lift?

In most cases, yes. Retrofitting needs the machine rating, the drive type and the controller make. We survey the machine room first — the interface differs between VVVF controllers and there is no universal wiring.

How long does the battery last?

Runtime depends on the bank: 65 Ah to 220 Ah is the range, giving anything from a couple of hours to a full eight on a typical residential machine. Bank life is a separate question — SMF typically runs four to five years in a ventilated machine room. Machine rooms on the terrace regularly run above 40 °C in a Pune summer and that can halve battery life, which is why our AMC includes an annual load test on the bank rather than just a voltage check.

Is a lift inverter mandatory?

Lift rules are state-administered and requirements vary, so check the current Maharashtra Lifts, Escalators and Passenger Conveyors rules and your local lift inspector for what applies to your building. In practice, a lift inverter is standard specification for new commercial installations and is on most building handover checklists.

Coverage

Where we supply and attend

Lift Inverter units are built at our Pune works and delivered, installed and commissioned across the city and the industrial belt around it.

Outside these areas we contract individually against distance, and we will tell you honestly if the response time you need is not one we can hold to. All areas served
