How it works

And when it’s the right answer

A line-interactive UPS keeps the load on filtered mains and uses an autotransformer to boost or buck voltage within a window, only calling on the inverter when the supply leaves that window entirely. It is cheaper to buy, cheaper to run and generates far less heat than a double-conversion unit, because the inverter is idle most of the time.

The trade-off is the transfer. Somewhere between four and eight milliseconds, the output is unsupported. Most modern equipment rides through that on its own input capacitors. Some does not — and knowing which is which is the whole decision.

We are straightforward about this: if your load is a row of PCs, a billing counter, a CCTV NVR or a router stack, an offline UPS is the correct specification and an online unit is money spent on protection you will never use.

vs Online UPS

Choose offline when the load tolerates a sub-10 ms break and the incoming supply stays within roughly ±15%. You save on purchase price, running cost and heat.

vs A home inverter with battery

A home inverter transfers in 10–20 ms with a modified sine output and no filtering. Fine for lights and fans, wrong for computers and instrumentation. Not to be confused with our industrial inverter, which is a different product again — that one has no mains input at all and runs off a station DC bus.

Is an offline UPS good enough for a computer?

For an ordinary desktop or an all-in-one, yes. A modern PC power supply holds its output through a mains break of roughly 16–20 ms, which comfortably covers the 4–8 ms transfer. Where it stops being good enough is equipment with tight input tolerances — CNC controllers, medical imaging, some lab analysers — or a supply that swings outside the AVR window several times a day.

What is the difference between offline and line-interactive?

A true offline UPS simply switches to the inverter when the supply goes out of range. Line-interactive adds an autotransformer that boosts or bucks the voltage first, so it corrects moderate swings without touching the battery. Everything we build in this range is line-interactive — it means far fewer battery cycles and a much longer battery life.

Why does my UPS switch to battery so often?

Almost always because the incoming voltage is spending time outside the AVR window, not because the UPS is faulty. Each transfer is a battery cycle, and cycles are what wear the battery out. If it is happening several times a day, a servo stabilizer upstream — or moving to an online UPS with its much wider input window — will solve it properly.
