How to compare UPS manufacturers
Most of the firms listed as UPS manufacturers in Pune assemble imported cabinets or resell somebody else’s. That is a legitimate business, but it is a different one, and it changes who answers the phone in year seven.
A search for a UPS manufacturer returns traders, wholesalers, system integrators and actual factories, all using the same word. The distinction matters less on the day you buy than it does the first time a board fails out of warranty, so it is worth establishing early. These are the questions that separate them, in the order worth asking.
Do they build it, or buy it?
Ask directly: which parts of this machine are made here? A real answer names the cabinet fabrication, the transformer winding, the power-stage assembly and the final test. A vague one talks about quality and infrastructure without naming a process.
The public record helps. An IndiaMART profile states whether the seller is registered as a Manufacturer, a Trader or a Retailer, and the GST registration date tells you how long the entity has existed — which is not always the same as the number of years claimed on the website. Neither is damning on its own. A trader with twenty years of service history may look after you better than a new factory. But you should know which you are buying from.
The single most useful question
Ask to watch your machine on the load bank before it ships. A manufacturer can schedule it. Anyone who cannot, or who offers a certificate instead, is not the one who built it.
What happens on the test bench
A UPS that powers up has not been tested. Ask what each unit goes through before dispatch and what you receive with it. Full-load testing on a resistive bank at rated capacity, a timed battery discharge, and readings that ship with the cabinet and match its serial — those are the answers worth hearing.
If a supplier cannot produce the test sheet for a specific serial number a year later, the test either did not happen or was not recorded against that machine.
Does the range actually cover your size?

A supplier whose own range tops out at 100 kVA and who quotes you 160 kVA is sourcing it. Ask whose machine it is, because the warranty and the spares chain follow the maker, not the invoice.
Claims that sound like features
Some differentiators are real and some are a design choice being sold as an advantage. A built-in isolation transformer is the common one: it removes the need for a separate unit, which is genuinely convenient, but it also adds loss, weight and cost to every machine whether your load needs isolation or not. On a clean earth with no leakage-current concern it buys nothing.
Ask what problem the feature solves on your site specifically, and what it costs in efficiency. A supplier who can answer both is describing engineering. One who cannot is reading a brochure.
The same test applies to design-life and uptime figures. "Twenty-year design life" and "98% uptime" are calculated under stated conditions — ask which conditions, and whether the ambient in your panel room is one of them.
Service is the part you buy for ten years
Two questions separate a service operation from a sales one. Do they service makes other than their own — which tells you whether they employ engineers or only fitters? And what does an annual maintenance visit contain?
On the second, one detail does most of the work. A quarterly visit that measures float voltage is not a battery test; it confirms the charger works. A timed discharge at rated load, cell by cell, is the only thing that answers how long the bank will actually hold. It takes half a day rather than twenty minutes, which is why it is the line most contracts leave out — and why it is worth reading for specifically.
Certifications, and what they are worth
ISO 9001 certifies that documented processes exist and are followed. It is a genuine signal about consistency and it is worth asking for. What it does not certify is that any particular machine performs to its specification, which is what the test sheet does.
CE, BS and EN marks on imported sub-assemblies say something about those parts, not about the finished cabinet. Ask what is certified — the component, the design, or the quality system — because all three get described the same way in a brochure.
References worth asking for
- An installation of roughly your size, in roughly your sector, that you may call
- How long that installation has been running, not just that it exists
- A machine they have serviced for more than five years — longevity is harder to fake than a sale
- What went wrong on a job, and what they did about it — the answer to this tells you more than the reference list
Signals worth treating carefully
- A capacity range that grows to match whatever you ask for
- A price quoted before anyone has asked about motor loads or starting method
- Two websites and two listings for the same firm, with different addresses
- Years in business on the website that do not match the GST registration date
- A warranty that covers the machine but excludes the battery without saying so plainly
None of these is proof of anything by itself. Together they tell you how carefully the business keeps its own records, which is a reasonable proxy for how carefully it will keep yours.

How can I tell if a UPS manufacturer actually manufactures?
Visit, and ask to see a machine on the load bank. A factory can schedule that; a trader cannot. Failing a visit, ask which processes happen on their premises — cabinet fabrication, transformer winding, power-stage assembly, final test — and check how the firm is registered on IndiaMART, where Manufacturer, Trader and Retailer are separate classifications.
Is ISO certification necessary when buying a UPS?
Not necessary, but useful. ISO 9001 tells you documented processes exist and are audited, which speaks to consistency across units. It says nothing about whether your specific machine meets its specification — that is what a load-bank test sheet against your serial number does. Ask for both and treat the test sheet as the more informative of the two.
Should I buy from the manufacturer or a dealer?
From whoever will still be answering the phone in year seven. A manufacturer knows the machine at component level and holds the test record. A good dealer may reach you faster and carry more stock. The question that settles it is who performs the service — if the dealer subcontracts it, you have added a layer without adding capability.
What should a UPS warranty cover?
Establish three things in writing: the term on the machine, the term on the battery — almost always shorter, and frequently pro-rated — and whether labour and travel are included or billed. A two-year warranty that excludes the bank is a one-year warranty on the expensive half.
How many quotations should I get?
Three, and insist they are for the same specification. Quotations for a UPS diverge mostly on what has been assumed about the battery bank and the runtime, so a cheaper number frequently describes a smaller bank rather than a better price. Give each supplier the same load list and the same required backup time, and compare what comes back.
